Abstract

660,107. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1947 [Sept. 22, 1945], No. 25063/47. Class 39 (i). Velocity - modulation apparatus comprises electrostatic means for projecting a convergent beam of electrons through a buncher gap, a drift tube, and a catcher gap, the gaps being formed in separate resonators 6, 7, Fig. 1, or in a single coaxial line resonator 20, Fig. 2, the beam converging to a cross-over at the second gap 5 or 26 and the drift tube 4 or 2 being conical, Fig. 1, or pear-shaped, Fig. 2, such that the drift tube is narrower at the catcher gap than at the buncher gap. The capacity of the catcher gap is thus less than the capacity of the buncher gap. In Fig. 1 the beam 3 is annular and is focused by cylinder 2. In Fig. 2 the pear-shaped drift tube 21 forms the central conductor of the coaxial line resonator and is carried from the outer wall 20 by members 27. The drift tubes need not be of circular cross-section. Specification 580,081 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the annular cathode 1 of Fig. 1 has a low emission coefficient but a large surface area to give the required total emission; its life is consequently longer than that of a small cathode with a high emission co-efficient. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
