Abstract

676,060. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 25, 1950 [Sept. 2, 1949], No. 21039/50. Class 39 (i). A reflex velocity modulation tube oscillator comprises an annular inclined cathode 1, beam forming electrodes 2, 3, which with an axial electrode 4 at resonator potential with conical head co-operating with re-entrant walls of the resonator 7 focus the electrons in a narrow gap in the resonator 7, a cup-shaped reflector electrode 14, the walls, and a central rod 15 of which together with grids 10, 13, 16 connected to the reflector and resonator return the electrons in a coaxial beam, through the resonator where they are received by a collector electrode 4 on the axis of the tube. The collector electrode 4 and axial electrode 17 may be integral. A protuberance 5 on the resonator assists focusing, The focus may be adjustable by controlling the potential of electrodes 2, 3. In a modification the returning electrons pass through a hollow electrode 4 and impinge on the centre conductor of a coaxial line output resonator.
