Abstract

625,259. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 1, 1946, No. 6449. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] In electron discharge tubes of the velocity modulation type, the walls 1, 2, Fig. 1, of the resonator which are sealed through the envelope are of different external diameter and are connected by a threaded sleeve having two portions 16, 18 of corresponding internal diameter, whereby adjustment of the tuning is effected by axial movement of the sleeve. Focusing of the beam is effected by forming the emitting surface of the cathode 7 and the juxta-posed surface of the reflecting electrode 8 of concave shape. Alternatively the reflecting electrode mirror may consist of two electrodes 8, 22, Fig. 4, the characteristic of the mirror being controlled by the difference of potential between them. Specification 582,486 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes also a device of the co-axial line type comprising two concentric cylinders 31, 32, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), with a central reflecting electrode 38 surrounded by a ring 42, and two cathodes 36, 361. In another arrangement the electron beam is reflected at an angle to its original direction so as to traverse the resonator at gaps 90 degrees apart: This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
