Abstract

768,747. Colour television tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1954 [Dec. 12, 1953], No. 35679/54. Class 39(1). To improve the control by two parallel-wire colour-selection grids in a cathode ray tube, a fine meshed grid 10 ie provided between the selection grids 8, 9 and the field electrode 7 of the screen having a mesh width not greater than onetenth of the spacing between successive wires of a single selection grid, and a focusing electrode, e.g. one of two annular electrodes 11, 13, a close meshed grid, or a combination of both, is disposed between the colour selection grids and scanning deflections field. The colour grids are not necessarily co-planar, and the screen is luminescent or incandescent and may be monochromatic, its images being projected through colour filters. The focusing electrode may be a frustro-conical ring with or without a mesh grid closing the end nearest the screen ; or two annular rings without a mesh grid or, as shown in Fig. 4, with a mesh grid 12 closing the inner surface of the first ring 11. Two frustroconical electrodes may be associated so as to give the beam an orthogonal approach to the selection grids, Fig. 5 (not shown). The focusing electrode may be a grid 16 alone, or advantageously, as shown in Fig. 7, associated with an annular electrode 17 which is at a potential lower than that of the grid 16, which itself exceeds the mean potential of the colour grids 8, 9, but is lower than that of the screen 7. The mean colour selection potential does not exceed one tenth the potential of the screen and the potential of the fine meshed grid is at most equal to the mean potential of the former and is not more than 10V lower than its lowest potential. The electrodes 8, 9, 11 form a retarding lens up to which the electrons travel at high velocity yet they reach the selection grids at a low velocity and are there controlled by small voltage variations.
