Abstract

596,567. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Jan. 31, 1944, No. 1818. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] The power output of an electron discharge device such as described in Specifications 528,041 and 5051-/44, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is increased by forming the resonator as a figure of revolution by rotating the resonators of these devices about an axis outside their walls and preferably parallel or perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of thier cross-section. In Fig. 1, the electron beam is supplied by an annular cathode 11 and focusing electrode 13, through the annular grid 16 or aperture of the resonator 14 which increases in section towards the centre. The anode 18 is in the form of a tube which may carry cooling fluid. In modifications, the cathode may be at the centre, Fig. 2 (not shown), or the axis of revolution may be parallel to the axis of symmetry of the cross-section of the resonator, Fig. 3 (not shown). A control grid may be interposed between the cathode and the grid 16.
