Abstract

629,238. Velocity-modulated tubes. PHILCO CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1945, No. 27610. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A velocity modulation electron discharge device for use in a frequency multiplying circuit comprises a resonant cavity, a repeller electrode, and a control grid, the repeller electrode being at a potential intermediate that of the cathode and the cavity so that the arrangement-is not self-oscillating, and the frequency of the resonant cavity is a multiple of the input frequency which is applied to the grid. The figure shows a " Klystron " (Registered Trade Mark) tube and a source 19 of radio frequency which is applied through a tuned transmission line between the control grid 14 and the cathode. Alternatively, an external band 18 may be used in place of the cathode for this purpose. The potential of the repeller electrode 15 is adjusted by means of a voltage divider 31 to a value intermediate that of the cathode and resonator 17 so as to introduce feedback and increase the output at harmonic frequency in resonator 17, although in the absence of the input to the grid, no oscillations are produced. The source 19 may be frequency-modulated by modulator 33. The frequency deviation of the output is limited by the Q of the resonant cavity 17, which may be controlled by resistive loading. Specification 582,526 is referred to.
