Abstract
667,663. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 21, 1947 [March 27, 1946], No. 7812/47. Class 39 (i). In velocity - modulation apparatus with buncher and catcher resonators 11, 15, Fig. 1, and in which the catcher resonator is provided with a pair of grids 14, 16 extending across the path of the beam, a third grid 1 is provided inside the catcher resonator and is coupled by low impedance means to grid 14, and means are provided for applying an adjustable accelerating voltage to grid 1 to adjust the electron transit time to a value giving maximum power output. The low impedance means may comprise a 3# - coaxial line 27 connected to grids 1, 14 and 4 A open at its far end or a - line shorted at its far 2 end. The line 27 may give a small impedance between the grids so as to take a small amount of power from the beam which may be fed back to the buncher. The grid 1 is shielded by grid 14 from the drift space and is connected to a tap on D.C. source 18. Tuning rings 7 are provided. The invention may be applied to reflex klystrons, Fig. 2 (not shown). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 suggests that the invention may be applied to " multiple cavity " klystrons. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
