Abstract

602,174. Electric resonators. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. July 1. 1942, No. 10927/45. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1941. Divided out of 602,164, [Group XL (a)]. [Class 40 (viii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] The impedance of a transmission line is varied by coupling to it a cavity resonator containing a variable electron stream. In one form, the resonator 1, Fig. 1, is interposed between the two parts 16, 16<1> of a transmission line. An electron stream from cathode' 12 is projected through the apertures 5, 6 in the cavity wall. By varying the beam intensity by means of control grid 15, the effective capacitance between wall 4 and re-entrant portion 2 is varied, and hence the natural frequency of the resonator ; the transmission of a constant frequency between the lines 16, 16' is thus also varied. In another form, the cavity resonator 1, Fig. 2, is coupled to the end of a stub line 16 inserted in the main. transmission line 18, 19 ; the effective impedance placed across the main line at the point of insertion may be varied between zero and infinity. Specification 8372/41, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is referred to.
