Abstract

582,488. Yelocity-modulated tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. Dec. 22, 1941, No. 16531. [Class 39 (i)] In electron discharge apparatus of the velocity-modulation type comprising an electron gun 9, a resonator chamber 2, with a resilient wall 8 which is distorted to vary the width of the gap 2<1>, and a reflecting electrode 10, a rigid portion 1 of the resonating chamber, the electron gun 9 and the reflecting electrode are all rigidly supported by the stem portion 3 of the envelope or in relation thereto, and the resilient wall portion 8 of the resonating chamber is connected to a flexible part 6 of the envelope at the end remote from the stem. As shown, the envelope comprises a glass portion 4, a rigid metal portion 5 and the flexible end 6. The resonator is formed by a cavity in the heavy disc 1 of metal such as copper, which is preferably brought into close proximity to the part 5 of the envelope, and thermally connected thereto by melting tin into the space therebetween during evacuation. The support for the reflecting electrode 10 is a stout wire 11 which is cranked to pass round the disc 1 through an aperture therein. A member 13 screwed in a vacuum tight manner through the wall 6 is secured to the wall 8 of the resonating chamber, and functions as the abutment for an external adjusting screw. A concentric line output lead passes through the envelope and is sealed by a glass bulb 20. Alternatively, the inner conductor of the concentric line passes through a glass seal. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the disc 1 is sealed between two metal parts of the envelope. Specification 579,412 is referred to.
