Abstract
574,512. Discharge apparatus. BROADWAY, L. F., and BULL, C. S. March 5, 1940, No. 4073. [Class 39 (i)] In a velocity-modulated discharge tube used as an oscillator, amplifier or detector, the beam is of ribbon form ; the electrode or electrodes 'inductively coupled with the beam is or are arranged to lie along at least one of the longer sides of the beam. This may be elliptical in cross-section. The modulating and coupling out electrodes 8, 8a may be in the form of flat strips each having earthed electrodes 7, 9 on either side; these latter may have extensions 16 blocking up the passage through the tube. A focusing magnetic field may be employed. Either or both of the input and output potentials may be produced by resonators arranged transversely to the beam and with apertures through which the beam passes, the apertures conform generally to the shape of the beam. The electrodes may be connected to external apparatus by leads of the type described in Specification 572,981. The tube may be reflex. Specification 529,771 also is referred to.
