Abstract

651,516. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1947, No. 23097. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] Velocity modulation apparatus comprises an input and output hollow wave guide 4, 5, each helically coiled in a plurality of turns and slotted to allow an annular beam of electrons to be projected therethrough, and a field-free drift tube 6 at a different D.C. potential from that of either wave-guide. Surge impedances Zo and Z<SP>1</SP>0 terminate the wave-guides. Specifications 564,890 and 603,715 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises an amplifier which is a single helical wave-guide in association with an annular cathode and a ring anode. Another modification comprises an axiallymounted cathode and a wave-guide folded in fretwork form. Two such wave-guides 24, 26 are combined as in Fig. 8 (Cancelled), with a braking electrode 25, the electron stream passing through slotted parts in the waveguides. Focusing of the electron stream is by magnetic means. The gain of the tubes is calculated theoretically. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
