Abstract

549,795. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 30, 1941, No. 6933. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a velocity modulation electron discharge tube of the kind in which the electron beam is projected successively through two resonant chambers separated by a drift space in which bunching of the electrons occurs, the beam is projected through grids occupying circular openings in the resonators and is of hollow form having a wall thickness not exceeding one-tenth of the operating wave length, so that the central portions of the grids are not traversed by the electrons. This ensures that the modulating field strength does not vary by more than 5 per cent over the whole cross section of the beam, so affording sufficiently uniform velocity modulation for satisfactory bunching. The tube shown comprises a cathode having an annular emitting surface 21 providing a hollow electron beam of the desired radial thickness which passes through grids 12, 13, 16, 17 associated with resonant chambers 11, 15 and a drift tube 14. The tube may be used as an amplifier, or as an oscillator by connecting the leads 20, 22 to the chambers 11, 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a tube with a solid beam the diameter of which is determined by similar considerations. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
