Abstract
572,540. Discharge apparatus. BULL, C. S. April 29, 1940, No. 7639. [Class 39 (i)] In electron discharge devices of the velocity modulated type, the electrodes 1, 2 through which the electron beam 4 passes and which are inductively coupled thereto, are in the form of flattened cylinders outside or inside the envelope 3, and are disposed with their major axes at right angles. The ends of the envelope are flattened to correspond to the electrodes, and electrostatic focusing may be employed between the electrodes to minimise spreading of the beam in the direction of the minor dimension of electrode 2. Alternatively, the electrodes may be in the form of plates whose length is large in comparison with their spacing, or in the form of toroid resonators, the apertures in which are elongated and at right angles to one another.
