Abstract
432,434. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and WHITAKER, F. P., Old Pastures, Dunchurch Road, Rugby. Jan. 26, 1934, No. 2778. [Class 39 (i)] To improve the breakdown voltage between the anode and grid of a vapour - filled discharge device, such as a mercuryarc rectifier, the anode is provided with recesses or holes which are opposite the openings in the grid. Grooves or recesses 3 in an anode are located opposite openings 4 in the grid 2. In a modification, a hollow cylindrical anode is provided with holes opposite the grid openings. Parts of a hollow anode and of a hollow grid may be spaced by internal and external members respectively to form annular openings therein, or the openings may be partly annular to provide parts which connect together the various portions of the electrodes. The anode may have a flat working surface. With curved anode surfaces, the recesses therein are so arranged that they are defined by the electrostatic lines which pass through the edges of the holes in the grid.
