Thermionic modulating apparatus.-A talking arc for use in wireless telephony is connected in series with a high-resistance whose optimum value is approximately equal to (e-a)/2i, e being the voltage in the circuit, i the are current and a the lowest voltage at which the arc will strike. Thin-pointed electrodes of tungsten or magnetite with a small air gap of the order of several millimetres are used. and the variations of potential across the electrodes may be employed for modulating thermionic or other generators.
