Abstract

184,560. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). May 11, 1921. Thermionic relays.-A thermionic valve of the negative-resistance type, in which the plate current varies inversely as the plate potential, is utilized as an amplifier by applying the input variations to the plate circuit and employing the grid circuit as the output circuit. The input variations may be applied by a transformer 8 across a resistance 7 connected between the plate 4 and filament 2 of the valve. The resulting variation of current passing between the control electrode or grid 3 and the filament 2 may affect u telephone or other apparatus 10 or a second amplifying-valve. The current variations in the grid circuit are in the opposite sense to those in the plate circuit. The resistance 7 has approximately the same value as the negative resistance of the plate circuit. The valve is preferably such that the plate current is independent of the voltage of the electrode 3 over the working range, thus permitting the use of considerable impedance in the circuit 2, 3.
