Abstract

185,167. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). May 19, 1921. Thermionic relays.-In an amplifier comprising a three-electrode valve of the dynatron type, means common to both the cathode-anode and cathode-third-electrode circuits are provided whereby the potential of the cathode is varied in accordance with the oscillations to be amplified with respect to both the anode and third electrode. This allows of the exclusion from the negative resistance circuit of all inductance so that the tendency to self-oscillate is destroyed. In an example Fig. 1, the valve 1 is so connected that the plate 5 has a higher potential than the grid which acts as the secondary cathode. Oscillations to be amplified are applied to the transformer 8. The negative resistance may be balanced by a positive resistance 9 and potential variations across this applied to the grid of an amplifier or detector 10. The secondary of transformer 8 may be shunted by a variable condenser 12 fcr tuning. In a modification in which the functions of the electrodes 4, 5 are interchanged, a resistance is included in the cathodethird electrode circuit and the telephones in the cathode-anode circuit.
