Abstract

203,382. Freedman, P. June 2, 1922. Discharge-gap apparatus.-In an arc discharge device for use as a rectifier, amplifier or oscillation generator, in which the discharge is controlled by a grid electrode, the three electrodes consist of a refractory material such as tungsten mounted on stalks of refractory conducting material, the anode 1, Fig. 1, being in the form of a sphere, plate, or block, the cathode 3, a filament, sphere, or block, and the grid, a ring, sphere, or block. The bulb contains a gas such as nitrogen, argon or neon at a pressure of from 0.5 inch to 28 inches of mercury. The grid is maintained at a positive potential. The curve ADE, Fig. 4, having a pronounced negative characteristic shows the relation between the anode voltage and current when the grid is in use, and curve ABC the relation when the grid is not used. The anode and cathode are so proportioned that when the device is operating as a rectifier the anode is at red heat and emits positive ions only, and when used as an amplifier the anode is at white heat and emits positive and negative ions. The arc may be started by means of a high voltage discharge between the anode and grid, or for large powers an auxiliary discharge may be produced between an auxiliary filament cathode and a main spherical cathode, the auxiliary discharge being interrupted when the main discharge has started.
