Abstract
507,340. Discharge lamps. MASSOLLE GES., J., and MASSOLLE, J. Dec. 14, 1937, No. 34589. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] A glow lamp having a screen directly in front of the anode to concentrate the more positive part of the discharge is provided with means for reducing the deficiency of the filling arising during operation in front of the anode due to the narrowness of the concentrating aperture. As shown, a lamp comprises a circular wire, hot cathode 6, an anode 2, a gauze or solid metal screen 3 with a polished end 4 having a conical aperture, and an outer screen 5 of conducting or insulating material. The screens are provided with apertures 9 so staggered or arranged that a discharge cannot pass through them but admitting gas to the region in front of the anode. The screen 3 is connected to the anode potential through an impedance 8 and serves as a starting electrode receiving a constant discharge. Electrode dimensions are specified. The lamp may be connected in series with an amplifier valve or may contain a control grid enclosing the cathode. The lamp may be filled with neon, helium, or nitrogen. Instead of or in addition to providing apertures 9, up to 15 per cent of a gas of high ionic mobility such as hydrogen may be added to the filling. The gas pressure may be between 0À6 and 6 mms.
