457,797. Electric lamps. COUSTAL, R. A., 88, Rue Garibaldi, Saint-Maur, Seine, France. June 5, 1935, No. 16369. Convention date, June 8, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XI] Luminescent material such as phosphorescent zinc sulphide is excited to emit light by a variable electric field and is disposed on the inner face 7 of a gas-tight, transparent enclosure 1 of pear-shape with its height equal to its width. The enclosure 1 is very highly evacuated so that cathodic phenomena and probably also ionization are absent. The traces of gas inevitably remaining in the enclosure may be air or neon. The field is produced by connecting electrodes 2, 3 to a high-frequency source. One electrode 3 may be of tin foil on the outside of the enclosure 1 and the other electrode 2 may be internal as shown or external, or both electrodes may be metal plates between which the enclosure 1 is placed. Earth may be used as one electrode by resting the enclosure 1 on a sheet of water or the enclosure may be metallized internally or externally to form electrodes. Several electrodes of one polarity may be used. During the evacuation of the enclosure, a high-frequency current is applied to the electrodes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also arrangements in which the enclosure is only partially evacuated. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
