Abstract
466,647. Discharge lamps. HARTEL, H. VON. Sept. 14, 1936, No. 25028. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp for use in the production of sound films, picture telegraphy, television, &c. contains an auxiliary electrode for controlling the luminosity and means for decreasing the cross-section of the luminous gas whereby, as it is stated, the brightness is increased. Fig. 2 shows such a lamp in which the cathode 2 is surrounded by a ceramic cylinder 13 with a small open, ing, and the control electrode is formed by the body 10 of the lamp, which is of metal with a glass &c. window 12, or the whole of the lamp body may be of glass and the control electrode formed by a metal lining. Fig. 3 shows a form in which the body 1 of the lamp has a capillary portion and the control electrode 14 is formed as a grid. In another form the cross-section of the luminous gas is restricted by a small opening in the control electrode which surrounds the cathode. The lamp may be filled with vapours of mercury, gallium or alkali or alkali earth metals at a pressure of from 10<-4> to 10<-2> Hg. to which may be added argon, neon or helium at 10<-2> to 10-1 Hg. working pressure. The internal resistance of the lamp may be suited to any source of operating current and the amplification controlled by properly choosing the nature and pressure of the gas filling and the position and shape of the control electrode.
