663,787. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Jan. 19, 1950 [Dec. 23, 1948], No. 33136/48. Drawing to Specification. Class 39 (i). A discharge lamp having solid electrodes has a filling of permanent gas, e.g. xenon, at high pressure, exceeding at least 100 mm. of mercury, and a quantity of one or more vaporizable metals such as mercury, cadmium, zinc, tellurium, thallium, indium, gallium or lead, whose ionization potential is less than that of the gas, such that in operation of the lamp under cool conditions the metal vapour pressure is so much less than that of the gas that the light emitted is appreciably due also to the gas. The gas pressure may be 600 mm. of mercury when the cold and the metal vapour pressure 1-10 mm. of mercury in operation, but may rise to 100 mm. when the filling pressure is of the order of 600 mm. if white light due to a mixture of xenon and mercury is required. The vapour pressure may be unsaturated. The cathode consists of a rod of thoriated tungsten. The lamp may dissipate more than 500 watts per cm. of the constricted discharge path. Magnetic deflectors may be used to prevent bowing of the discharge due to convection.
