Abstract
600,495. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FRANCIS, V..J., and NELSON, E. H. Sept. 24, 1945, Nos. 24682/45, 32398/45 and 18427/46. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure metal vapour discharge lamp with a filling of mercury with cadmium and/or zinc is constructed to satisfy the following conditions. Where W is the voltage dissipated, A the internal area of the envelope, L the distance between the running electrodes. W (1) - is not less than 10 watts per square A centimetre if the filling comprises cadmium and not less than 15 watts per square centimetre if the filling comprises zinc without cadmium. W (2) - is not less than 250 watts per cm. L (3) The true efficiency is not less than the minimum for wattage W as defined in the Specification, e.g. 20 lumens per watt at 500 watts. (4) The quantity of mercury is so small that the light emitted has a red ratio of not less than 8 per cent. Fig. 2 shows such a lamp adapted to dissipate 1 kilowatt and to operate from 230 volt A.C. mains wherein the envelope 1 is 2 mms. thick, the greatest width is 40 mms., axial length is 50 mms., and the distance between the electrodes 2, 2<1> consisting of tungsten rods 3 mms. diameter with starting electrodes 3, 3<1> held in grooves by coils 4, 4<1> is 25 mms. The lamp is supported from a metal frame 6, which is supported from a hard glass outer jacket 7. The metal filling contains 60 per cent mercury, 40 per cent cadmium or 40 per cent zinc or 20 per cent cadmium and 20 per cent zinc, and a very small amount of argon.
