Abstract
523,235. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Dec. 29, 1938, No. 37736. [Class 39 (i)] In a high pressure metal vapour discharge lamp having a quartz envelope with luminescent material outside the envelope the filling comprises (1) mercury nearly all evaporated in full operation and then having a vapour pressure exceeding three atmospheres and (ii) zinc which is not all evaporated in full operation ; a rare gas is also present. Dimensions and consumption of a lamp are given wherein the discharge is 30 mm. long ; the ends of the discharge tube are coated with platinum paint and the tube is enclosed in an outer envelope coated internally with zinccadmium sulphide activated with copper to give orange coloured fluorescence. Specification 431,409 which describes the use of cadmium and zinc with mercury as a filling is referred to. The effects of the cadmium and zinc are described.
