Abstract
467,692. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) March 17, 1936, No. 7991. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XI] An electric discharge lamp comprises means for exciting the neon spectrum by the passage of a discharge through a filling mainly or wholly of neon, luminescent material excited by the discharge to emit visible light and a coloured light filter located in the path to the observer of the light from both the discharge and the luminescent material, the filter being adapted to transmit a substantial proportion of red neon light. Preferably the discharge is pure neon at 1-5 mms. pressure, the luminescent material, for example calcium tungstate, emits blue light, and the filter is bright blue, for example a blue glass envelope on the inner surface of which the calcium tungstate is coated. The resulting light is then violet. The luminescent material may be in the form of letters. Cold or thermionic electrodes may be employed. The prior use, for producing violet light, of a helium discharge in a violet envelope or of a neon discharge continually supplied with hydrogen, is referred to and the use of neonmercury mixtures emitting an appreciable mercury spectrum is disclaimed. Specifications 276,018, [Class 39 (i)], 362,885, and 457,486 are referred to.
