Abstract
476,240. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) June 4, 1936, No. 15659. [Class 39 (i)] In an elongated discharge lamp of the type adapted to operate at voltages greatly exceeding mains voltage and in which one considerable portion of the light comes from a positive discharge column which occupies the greater part of the distance between the electrodes, and another considerable portion from a layer of luminescent material in contact with and excited by the discharge, the filling is neon with a small proportion, preferably 0À25-2 per cent, of one or more of the gases argon, krypton or xenon, and the luminescent material is one emitting visible light when excited by radiation of 600-1200Š. Other gases, particularly hydrogen and mercury, are excluded. The luminescent material may be willemite (giving yellow or green resultant light), calcium tungstate (giving colours between blue and rose), zinc tungstate (giving approximate white), or mixtures of these. The pressure is preferably between 1À5 and 10 mms., and the current density between 0À01 and 0À1 A/cm<2>. British Specification 457,486, and U.S.A.
