Abstract

578,150. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and ALDINGTON, J. N. Nov. 21, 1939, No. 30501. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A mercury vapour discharge lamp with an inert gas-filling to operate at low pressure and low voltage, say 24 volts, has a separately heated cathode and the product of the interelectrode distance in centimetres by the pressure of the filling in millimetres lies between 2 and 35. The electrode may be separate helices, or the anode may be a gauze cylinder surrounding the cathode. The cathode may be a tungsten helix enclosing a rod of barium strontium silicate. The radiation is mainly ultraviolet, and may be employed as such, the bulb being of glass opaque to ordinary light, or the bulb may be coated with fluorescent material. The voltage of the cathode heating circuit is low, say 4 volts, as compared with the arc voltage.
