Abstract

436,413. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London. - (Patent - Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gl³hlampen, 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) Sept. 3, 1934, No. 25321. [Class 39 (i)] Lamps in which luminescent material is excited by ultra-violet radiation from a mercury-vapour discharge are operated at a frequency exceeding 10<6> cycles per second and at a current density of the discharge below 10 milliamps. per sq. cm., so that the luminescent light is not modified by visible light from the discharge. The vapour pressure of the mercury is below À01 mm. and neon or argon may be added at a pressure of a few mm. The fluorescent material may be inside or on the envelope or between double walls of the discharge tube or may be on screens associated with the envelope or within a fitting housing the tube, the envelope being transparent to ultra-violet radiation. The electrodes of the tube may be external or internal and in the latter case may be thermionic. Colour filters may be added.
