438,910. Fluorescent screens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) Aug. 28, 1934, No. 24777. [Class 98 (i)] [See also Group XL] An electric discharge lamp is provided on its inner wall with a layer of fluorescent material excited by radiation from the discharge and comprising a mixture of a modification of zinc silicate which fluoresces yellowish-white and of a material, such as calcium tungstate, which fluoresces blue, whereby a substantially white light is produced from the combination. The modified zinc silicate may contain manganese, possibly in the form of lower oxides. In an example a mixture of 93 per cent of the zinc silicate and 7 per cent of calcium tungstate is coated on the inner wall of a low pressure mercury lamp, the thickness of the layer being just sufficient to prevent transmission of ultra-violet radiation. According to the Provisional Specification the fluorescent mixture may be applied to the envelope or to a screen in front of the tube and may comprise 90-97 per cent of the zinc silicate.
