Abstract

498,740. Luminescent materials for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RANDALL, J. T. (Patent- Treuhand-Ges. fiir Elektrische Gl³hlampen) May 10, 1937, No. 13286. [Class 98 (i)] Luminescent material applied to the quartz envelope of a high pressure metal vapour electric discharge lamp contains at least three components of which one is adapted to emit red luminescent light under excitation by radiation in the range 4000-3000 A.U., one adapted to emit red luminescent light under excitation by 3000-2200 A.U. and one adapted to emit blue luminescent light under excitation by 4000-2000 A.U. The components given in the Specification are, in order, zinc cadmium sulphide containing 20-40 per cent cadmium sulphide and activated by copper, cadmium silicate or zinc-beryllium silicate activated by manganese, and zinc sulphide activated by silver or calcium tungstate which may be activated by 2-4 per cent of lead. Each component constitutes between 25-50 per cent of the total luminescent material. The material is applied preferably to the interior of the jacket surrounding the quartz envelope, the space between the envelope and jacket containing oxygen and helium at a pressure below atmospheric.
