Abstract

1466588 Fluorescent discharge lamps WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 July 1974 [3 July 1973] 29251/74 Heading H1D A high pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp comprises an elongated mercury-filled arc tube 16 enclosed by an envelope 12, with a first non-luminescent oxide coating of principally submicron particles of at least one of the following: silica, magnesia, titania, alumina, deposited directly on the inside of the envelope 12; and a phosphor mixture, deposited on the layer of non-luminescent oxide, and consisting essentially of 70-90% by weight of either yttrium phosphate-vanadate activated by europium or yttrium vanadate activated by europium, and 10-30% by weight of either magnesium fluorogermanate activated with manganese or magnesium arsenate activated with manganese. Methods of forming the non-fluorescent layer on the inner surface of the envelope, and of forming the fluorescent layer on the non-fluorescent layer, are described. The provision of the non- fluorescent layer results in a shift in the frequency of the light emitted, to resemble (in colour) light from an incandescent lamp.
