Abstract

1,042,184. Fluorescent discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Nov. 27, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963], No. 48383/64. Heading H1D. A fluorescent discharge lamp, using an indium amalgam as a source of mercury vapour, has an internal envelope coating comprising indium particles admixed with a phosphor, or a light-transmitting indium layer between the envelope and a phosphor layer. In particular, the inner surface of a lamp bulb may be coated with a suspension of indium, and heated at about 550‹ C. to remove the binder, before being coated with a phosphor suspension and reheated. The intermediate heating step may be omitted if different binders are used for the indium and phosphor suspensions, e.g. nitrocellulose and ethylcellulose. Alternatively, the initial indium layer may be applied by vacuum or chemical deposition, or the lamp bulb may be coated with a suspension of a mixture of indium and phosphor particles. Specific examples are given. The lamp may contain argon at a pressure of 2 mm. of Hg, or a mixture of 85% argon and 15% helium, together with a small quantity of mercury.
