Abstract

603,326. Fluorescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. Nov. 9, 1945, No. 29911. [Class 39 (i)] The light output of luminescent material converting primary radiation from a discharge lamp into secondary radiation of longer wavelength is improved by placing the luminescent material between the light source and a surface reflecting both primary and secondary radiation. The phosphor layer may be coated on to a diffuse reflector or one which is also translucent to the secondary radiation. A preferred reflector material is magnesium oxide. The reflector and/or luminescent layers may cover either the whole or a part of the envelope of a tubular lamp, e.g. as in Fig. 12, or may cover the arches of a multi-channel lamp as in Fig. 14.
