Abstract

660,260. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd., and SCOTT, W. J. Feb. 25, 1949 [Feb. 13, 1948], No. 4284/48. Class 39 (i). In an ultra-violet lamp having a quartz or fused silica envelope, the part of the envelope 5 surrounding a lead-in conductor 4 has an insert 7 of material capable of reducing the transmission of radiation along this part. The total internal reflection of radiation within the part 5, owing to its high refractive index, tends to cause overheating of the vacuum-tight seal to the knife-edged molybdenum cup 6, which is reduced by the inserted collar 7 of material more opaque to ultraviolet radiation. The material 7 may consist of a translucent silica containing a multiplicity of air bubbles.
