Abstract
1,272,413. Metal-vapour lamps. THORN LIGHTING Ltd. 15 April, 1970 [15 April, 1969], No. 19304/69. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp comprises a first phosphor whose light emission is greater at a high temperature than a low temperature and a second phosphor whose emission is greater at a low temperature than at a high temperature provided at different regions of the lamp envelope whereby the first phosphor operates at a higher temperature than the second. The first and second phosphors respectively may be europium activated yttrium-vanadate and manganese activated magnesium fluorogermanate with the first phosphor being coated on the uppermost part of the envelope and thus at the higher temperature. Two embodiments are described in which the phosphors are coated on the inner surface of an envelope containing a mercury-arc tube. The phosphors provide emission in bands of the visible spectrum in which the mercury spectrum is deficient. Additional phosphors, e.g. europium activated strontium silicate, may be provided.
