Abstract

532,941. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HARRIS, N. L., and SHAYLOR, J. H. July 19, 1939, No. 20966. [Class 39 (i)] Luminescent material used in a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp consists of three components (i) cadmium borate (ii) magnesium, zinc, cadmium or similar light giving tungstate and (iii) zinc beryllium silicate activated by 2-3 per cent of manganese or the material described and claimed in Specification 495,706 or this material modified as set forth in Specifications 509,857,522,607 and 530,510; these components are used to give an approximation to daylight or as a substitute for incandescent lighting the proportions being according to a diagram accompanying the Provisional Specification. The Specification describes the process of manufacturespecifying proportions and temperatures-of the following :-(i) zinc beryllium silicate from silica, zinc oxide and beryllium silicate, with manganous chloride for the activator ; (ii) magnesium tungstate from tungstic acid, ammonia solution, and hydrochloric acid to produce tungstic acid to which magnesium oxide is added ; and (iii) cadmium borate from cadmium nitrate, ammonium tetraborate, manganese dioxide and lithium chloride. Specification 535,897 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 521,796 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91).
