Abstract
521,796. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1938, No. 31331. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A luminescent coating for an electric discharge lamp containing mercury vapour comprises a mixture of 60 parts zinc oxide, 40 parts silica, 1.5 to 2.5 parts beryllium oxide, 3 to 5 parts manganese dioxide and ¢ part of lithium chloride by weight which has been fired at 1000‹C. for three hours or at 1100‹C. for half an hour and preferably quenched in water. The fluorescent colour varies from yellow to pink and green with variation of proportions. The preferred proportion of beryllium oxide is 2 parts and of manganese dioxide 4 parts. The zinc oxide,' silica, beryllium oxide and manganese dioxide may be added in the form of zinc nitrate, silicic acid, beryllium hydroxide and manganese nitrate respectively. The material may be mixed with cadmium borate either alone or with magnesium tungstate in order to yield a white luminescent light. a tubular lamp is described having a filling of argon at a pressure of 4 mm. of mercury, and a small quantity of mercury. Its electrodes 11 are thermionic cathodes of the activated type heated to emission by the discharge, and the lamp is preferably operated at a pressure corresponding to a temperature of 40‹C. The luminescent coating 12 is on the inside of the envelope 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 478,302 and 492,296, [both in Group XX].
