Abstract

869,147. Fluorescent lamps; luminescent materials. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 27, 1959 [Aug. 19, 1958], No. 26685/58. Class 39(1). A mercury vapour fluorescent electric discharge lamp has the inside of its light transmitting enevelope coated with a phosphor, there being intimately intermixed therewith a non-luminescent pigment so that when the phosphor is excited to fluorescence by the discharge the pigment itself absorbs blue light predominantly or the pigment imparts to the phosphor a body colour which absorbs blue light predominantly. The pigment is preferably yellow cadmium sulphide extended by carium sulphate and the phosphor which may be prepared by milling with an organic solvent and using a binder may comprise a mixture of 63.4 % of a calcium halophosphate phosphor suitable for making the lamp of "white" colour, 27.1 % of a magnesium borate activated by cerium and manganese as described in Specification 848,593, 9.05 % of a barium titanium phosphate phosphor as described in Specification 678,596 plus 0.45 % of the pigment. Alternatively the phosphor may comprise 60% of a halophosphate phosphor similar to that in A, but suitable for making a lamp of a "Daylight" or "Cool White" colour, 20% of the magnesium borate phosphor mentioned above, 17.3 % of a manganese activated magnesium fluorogermanate phosphor, 2% of manganese activated zincsilicate phosphor, plus 0.7 % of the pigment.
