Abstract

1,205,319. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 50259/68. Heading C4S. A luminescent material activated by divalent Eu is defined by the formula wherein x + y + p + z = 1, one or two of the parameters x, y, z may be zero, and 0À05 # p # 0.003 preferably 0.04 # p # 0.006 (e.g. p = 0À01, 0.02). Specific phosphors instanced are and In preparation, the mix is heated at 1050‹ C. for 1 hr., cooled, ground and re-heated at 1150‹ C. for 1 hr., in both instances in a N 2 -H 2 (20 : 1) atmosphere. To facilitate the reaction an excess of SiO 2 may be included and a fluoride of Ca, Ba or Sr employed as flux. Emissions between 440 and 480 nm. are instanced with U.V. (e.g. 2537 Š), deep blue and electron excitation. The phosphor may be used in C.R.T.s, LP and HPMV lamps for illumination and photo-chemical processes. In a luminescent screen in a lamp, the phosphor may be mixed with manganese activated magnesium arsenate or calcium halophosphate activated by manganese and antimony.
