Abstract
431,409. Mercury vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and RYDE, J. W., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. Jan. 8, 1934, No. 673. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XI] A means for illumination suitable for rendering flesh tints comprises a high-pressure mercury vapour lamp, a source of red light and also a source of blue light, the light from the lamp and that from the two sources being similarly distributed in all places where the illumination is intended to be used. The source of blue light may comprise a quantity of cadmium or zinc added to the mercuryvapour lamp, preferably in amount so small that the luminous efficiency of the lamp is not decreased by more than 10 per cent. The effective amount of the added metals, which depends on the temperature, may be adjusted by altering the area of a reflecting coating on the tube as described in Specifications 410,648 and 430,437. Alternatively, a second discharge tube, such as a low pressure mercury lamp or luminescent materials such as Balman's paint, zinc, magnesium, strontium or lithium sulphides may be employed as external sources of blue light. The source of red light may be phosphorescent material as described in Specification 401,846, [Group XI]. Luminescent materials may be combined with the mercury lamp in the manner described in Specification 431,408.
