Abstract

511,199. Supply systems for discharge lamps and incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. fur Elektrische Gluhlampen). Feb. 15, 1938, No. 4702. [Class 38 (iv)] The supply circuit for a light source consisting of a H.P.M.V. discharge lamp in series, with an incandescent filament comprises at least one element which both has reactive impedance and is in series with both the filament and the discharge, the R.M.S. voltage across the element in full operation being not much less, or preferably somewhat greater, than that across the filament, whereby the red ratio of the combination is much greater than that of the H.P.M.V. lamp alone and the luminous efficiency of the combination is greater for a given life that it could be if no circuit element had reactive impedance, the H.P.M.V. lamp being in both cases of the same commercial type and the filament of the same material. The element used may comprise a simple choke or condenser in series with the discharge lamp and filament, or preferably a choke 3 and condenser 4, both in series with the discharge lamp 1 and filament 2; alternatively the condenser may shunt either the discharge lamp or filament or both. A choke in series with the filament and discharge may be replaced by the leakage reactance of a strayfield transformer from the secondary of which the lamp circuit is supplied. The red ratio may be increased by the use, in known manner, of luminescent materials emitting red light. Specifications 486,586 and 491,070 are referred to.
