Abstract

633,448. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21690. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] Series systems.-In an apparatus which provides simultaneous starting of two discharge lamps 11, 12, the ballast impedance 13, the filamentary electrode 9 of one lamp, a starting switch 18, the primary winding of a transformer 20 and the filamentary electrode 10 of the other lamp are connected in series, and the secondary winding of the transformer 20 is connected to supply the other two filamentary electrodes 16, 17. A condenser 19 may be shunted across the primary winding of the transformer to increase the heating current through the electrodes. The ballast may comprise a choke coil, or in the case of low wattage lamps an incandescent lamp; alternatively, when the supply is derived from an auto-transformer 3 having a high leakage reactance, the separate ballast may be omitted.
