Abstract

652,426. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. GUARDIAN ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5597. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] A circuit arrangement for a discharge lamp 10 having filamentary electrodes 11, 12, which provides a high starting voltage across the electrodes and automatic reduction of heating current to the electrodes whilst the lamp is operating, comprises a swinging choke 16 included in one of the supply leads to the lamp electrodes and a heating transformer 18 comprising two secondary windings 20, 21 connected to the respective electrodes and a primary winding 19 connected at one end to a tapping 24 on the choke 16 and at the other in series with the secondary winding 20 to that supply lead 14 connecting the electrode 11 direct to a supply terminal, the core cross-section of the transformer being substantially greater than that of the choke so that during preheating the choke functions as an auto-transformer to provide the high voltage across the lamp, and upon initiation of the lamp discharge the voltage drop increases across that portion of the choke remote from the lamp to lower the heating current. A condenser may be shunted across the lamp to facilitate starting and the transformer and choke may be loosely coupled.
