Abstract

856,773. Supply systems for space-discharge apparatus. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 10, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958], No. 30874/58. Class 38 (4). A gaseous discharge lamp circuit arrangement having improved starting facilities includes A.C. mains supply terminals N, L across which are connected two circuits: a first circuit comprising a transformer primary 2-3 and a choke G connected in series; a second circuit comprising a first filament A of lamp F, a first transformer secondary 1-2 and a capacitor C. The circuit arrangement is completed by a third circuit comprising the second transformer secondary 3-4 connected in series with the second filament B of lamp F. On switching terminals N, L into the A.C. supply, a momentary surge of current occurs through the second circuit whilst capacitor C is charging up, resulting in the application across the lamp of a high-voltage ionizing pulse for assisting starting. Another embodiment includes a tapped choke G and a discharge resistor connected across capacitor C. Further embodiments differ in the connectionpoint of the choke to the transformer, and in the connections between the capacitor C, secondary 1-2 and filament A, but in all the capacitor, secondary and filament form a series circuit between the terminals L, N. The circuit may be adapted to feed a plurality of lamps in series, by providing the transformer with further isolated secondary windings for supplying the intermediate lamp filaments.
