Abstract

701,811. Supply systems for series connected space discharge apparatus. SOLA ELECTRIC CO. May 1, 1951 [May 9, 1950], No. 10188/51. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] An energizing circuit for two discharge lamps 16, 17 and designed to prevent the high starting voltage appearing across the lamp socket terminals when either lamp is removed therefrom comprises a starting and running transformer having primary and secondary windings 18, 19 and two pairs 12, 14 and 13, 15 of spaced contact means for engaging the lamp terminals 33, 46 and 39, 50, the first contact means 12, 13 of each pair including two spaced contacts 29, 31 and 36, 37 to jointly receive a lamp terminal 33, 39 so as to be interconnected thereby, one 29, 37, of the spaced contacts of each of the first contact means being connected to the primary winding 18, the other spaced contacts 31, 36 being connected to a supply S, and the second contact means 14, 15 being connected to the secondary winding 19. Thereby removal of either lamp open-circuits the primary Winding 18. The transformer may have a high-reactance which may be provided by magnetic shunts as disclosed in Specification 599,802 and as also disclosed therein a condenser 21 may resonate with the transformer leakage reactance to control the lamp running current. the series combination of a resistor 22 and a condenser 23, or either, may be shunted across lamp 17 to provide sequential lamp starting.
