Abstract

734,273. Transformers; supply systems for space discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 6, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5876/52. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). A transformer for feeding a capacitive load whose starting voltage is higher than its working voltage, such as a gas- or vapour-filled discharge tube 5 serially connected with a condenser 4, has a main secondary winding 9 closely coupled to or in part identical with the primary winding 3 and which produces .an open-circuit voltage substantially greater than the starting voltage, and an auxiliary secondary winding 10 coupled loosely, with the primary winding and. connected in oppsoition to the secondary winding 9 to reduce the resultant open-circuit voltage to not less than the starting voltage, it being stated that the flux linked with the auxiliary winding 10 is the same in both the open-circuit and working conditions. As shown, an additional lamp 13 may be supplied with lagging current from another secondary winding 12 and the transformer core 1 has magnetic shunts 7, 11 to produce the required leakage flux paths.
