730,656. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus; transformers; automatic current regulation. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 18, 1952 [July 18, 1951], No. 18228/52. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). A constant current circuit for operating one or more electric discharge lamps 6 comprises a double wound transformer having a core structurally split into two portions 1, 3 separated from each other by an air gap 5 and upon which are respectively wound a primary and a secondary winding 2, 4, the latter being connected to the lamp(s) through a capacitor 7 of such value that the circuit operates at a power factor near unity, and the secondary core portion 3 is saturated by the lamp discharge current, while the primary circuit includes unsaturated leakage reactance. The transformer may have more than one secondary winding 4 on the core portion 3 for supplying more than one lamp in a similar manner to that shown. The capacitor 7 is also of such value as to resonate at the supply frequency with the combined reactance of winding 4 and leakage reactance of the primary circuit comprising winding 2. For starting a switch 8 is provided.
