Abstract

616,049. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 22, 1946, No. 25103. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] In order that the voltage applied to a discharge lamp and the current heating the filamentary electrodes thereof may both be reduced when the lamp strikes main secondary windings 2a, 2b in series with the lamp are arranged on separated portions of an elongated transformer core A and windings 3, 4 supplying heating current to the electrodes are arranged between them; magnetic shunts may also be arranged between the windings. The main secondary winding 2a is preferably closely coupled with the primary winding 1 and these two windings may form a step-up autotransformer with a power-factor condenser connected across the full winding. When the lamp strikes the current in winding 2b produces a flux opposing that due to the primary winding causing a fall in lamp voltage and in heating current.
