Abstract

562,292. Transformers; supply systems for discharge lamps. BRITISH, THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 27, 1943, No. 1365. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1942. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A discharge lamp 1 of the type having a fluorescent coating and electrodes which are not preheated at starting is supplied through a transformer adapted to superpose a peak on the voltage wave of the A.C. source 4 for starting whilst maintaining a relatively good power factor during running. The transformer comprises a three-limbed core, one limb of which carries the primary 13 and, if desired, a part of the secondary, the main part of the secondary 15 which is in series with the lamp being carried by another limb which includes a part 18 of reduced cross-section operating at saturation, while the third limb 10 forms a magnetic shunt. A condenser may be connected in series with the lamp to cause it to operate with a leading current.
