Abstract

601,380. Transformers. BOUCHEH INVENTIONS, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1944, No. 15046. Convention date, June 25, 1942. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A transformer for supplying luminescent lamps comprises a primary and two secondary windings on the same main magnetic core, there being a magnetic shunt between the primary and one of the secondary windings and a condenser in series with the other secondary winding which is adjacent the primary. Primary winding 16 energized from a source 19 is wound on a centre limb 11 of a core 10. A secondary winding 20 wound closely round the primary supplies a fluorescent gas discharge lamp T, which has a condenser C in series to improve the power factor and limit the value of the current. A second lamp T 2 is supplied from another secondary winding 21 connected in autotransformer relationship with the primary 16, so that it receives the sum of the voltages in primary 16 and secondary 21. When the arc in lamp T 2 is extinguished at the end of each ¢ cycle, the flux passes through centre limb l and yoke 15 to induce sufficient voltage in secondary 21 for the voltage as it rises across lamp T 2 to restrike the arc, whereupon the flux is immediately diverted through the shunts SH 1 , SH 2 and across airgaps G 1 , G 2 , little voltage then being induced in secondary 21 ; the voltage across lamp T 2 falls but remains just sufficient to keep the arc in being during the rest of the ¢ cycle.
